AGL INSTALLATION UPDATES

Page last updated 19/04/2024

In May 2023 our AGL system suffered a catastrophic lighting strike. Despite our best endeavours with engineers to repair the ageing system, the current installation has been deemed beyond economical repair (Due to the age of the installed system, availability of parts and ongoing costs to support its operation).

The project to install a new lighting system will cost £1.5 million and installation commenced in early March 2024, with a targeted completion of the end of June 2024. This will involve replacing every element of the system, cables, light fittings, transformers, control systems etc.

The above dates and work schedule are subject to change depending on operational requirements, weather, and any other external factors which may influence the work schedule. We will keep this page updated with the latest information as we have it.

Compound

During the lighting installation, a compound will be created on stands 6-9 of the apron. This will allow for welfare facilities for contractors, as well as materials and equipment storage.

For the duration of the works, all stands on the back line (4-9, + the two smaller ones nearest the terminal) will be unavailable as they will be designated for vehicle access / egress.

Run-Ups

Please be conscious of propwash from your aircraft when doing runups.  Your propwash could cause injury to persons within the compound, or damage to the equipment and materials stored there.  It may be necessary to do run-ups for 25 on one of the apron stands, or on taxiway A, please follow FISO directions.

TAXIWAY CLOSURES

There will at times be closures of Taxiway A, C, D, and E.  At these points, not all entries or exits will be available, which may necessitate backtracking on the runway.  Please have in mind the closures and try to ensure your landing or takeoff is as efficient as possible to avoid inconveniencing other airport users.

OOH FLYING

There may be some evenings where the installation team make use of the late light to do some works within the runway strip, and so OOH will be unavailable.  If you're planning a trip where you intend to operate OOH, please book your OOH now, so we have visibility of those dates, and inform our contractors accordingly.
